Book Review: The Crowning Glory of Calla Lily Ponder

Book Title: The Crowning Glory of Calla Lily Ponder
Publisher: Harper Collins
Genre: Fiction
Price: $25.99
Page Count: 395 (including Epilogue and Acknowledgments)

In the tradition of Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Rebecca Wells brings us another beautifully crafted tale of a woman on a voyage of self-discovery. Another book of bonding relationships: the bond between mother and daughter; the bond between 3 childhood friends; the bond between a man and a woman, 'Calla Lily Ponder will have you laughing, crying, and remembering the life lessons that have shaped us all.

Calla Lily Ponder, named for her parents' favorite flower, grows up in a small Louisiana town, La Luna, near the La Luna River. She is especially close with her mother, whom she calls M'Dear. M'Dear, who fixes hair at her porch-based, "Crowning Glory Porch Shop," and instructs dance at the "Swing 'N Sway" with Calla's father, teaches Calla the importance of following dreams.

Along the way, Calla makes 2 friends: Renee, whom she's known "almost since birth" and Sukey, self-proclaimed royalty. She also meets Tuck, a rude little boy who has come into her life when he traveled to La Luna to live with his grandparents. As Tuck and Calla grow older, their relationship grows into love.

Through the tragedy of losing her mother as a teenager and then losing Tuck as he embarks on his new life in California, Calla conjures up the strength to follow her dream of becoming a professional cosmetologist by enrolling in the L'Académie de Beauté de Crescent. It's there she learns to channel her healing energy, to embrace life in the city, and to love again.

As Calla endures more tragedy, a ghost from her past will reappear and Calla will need to make a decision that could change her life.
